Wombats, Kangaroos and Koalas, Oh My!

Mo and I are 3 for 3 for going to the beach on the weekends and it’s a record we have no intention to break anytime soon! This weekend we decided to go to Coogee beach and it might just be my favorite so far! It wasn’t too crowded and the waves were huge, but not unbearable. The name Coogee actually comes from the Aboriginal word koojah meaning “smelly place” because of the smell from the seaweed. Luckily they clean this beach daily so you would never know that the seaweed or the smell exists! There is a popular oceanfront 6K walk you can do from Bondi beach to Coogee and even though we had planned to do this walk, we ended up being beach bums instead. Oops!

As much as I love the beach, my real excitement of this past weekend was going to the zoo! We went to Taronga Zoo, which is located high on a hill looking over Sydney Harbor. The giraffes have the best view of the Harbor Bridge! What was great about this zoo was how close you could get to the animals. Mo and I are used to lots of sleeping, far-away animals at the zoos we’ve been to back home, but we got pretty close to a lot of the animals here! The koalas slept a majority of the time we saw then, but they sleep 20 hours a day so that’s acceptable. Plus they’re so cute when they sleep! We saw so many animals we had never seen (or even heard of!) before and had a great time. Some of the animals we saw included a Kimono dragon, a sun bear, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, a Tasmanian devil, Australian penguins, meercats, and more! Here are a few of the pictures we took. I’m sure we’ll be back!
