Planning parties is something I truly love- anything from a small girl’s night in to a big holiday celebration. My favorite kind of event to plan, however, is a SURPRISE. There’s just something about the guest(s) of honor having no idea what’s coming that makes me giddy with excitement.
This past fall, I had the absolute privilege of throwing not one, but TWO surprise engagement parties for two of my best friends (with the help of many other people of course!). Today’s post is about the first one, and if you or anyone you know is into fishing, you won’t want to miss it!
Knowing that this first engagement party would take place in the fall in New England, it was oh, so tempting to go with a “falling in love” theme. Deciding to go with a theme that was a bit more unique and personal (and yes, cheesy) for the couple, we choose “Two Less Fish in the Sea.” Not only has Dan been fishing his whole life, but they had also dressed up as Rainbow Fish and a fisherman for Halloween the previous year. And yes, there is evidence.
But before I get into the details of the party, let me introduce you to this wonderful couple in the words of the beautiful bride-to-be, Hilary.
“You just know when you know.” This line completely describes mine and Dan’s relationship. We both just knew that there was something so different and special about our relationship right from the beginning.
Dan and I met in the most un-romantic way– an online dating website, but quickly learned that finding each other online wasn’t just a coincidence. I 100% believe that I was put on this earth to be with Dan. He brings out the best in me, sees me past my faults, and chooses to love me every day. He is my best friend, my shoulder to cry on, and my forever partner in this adventure of life.
I’m so blessed to have these two as friends, so honored to be part of their wedding, and so happy and excited for them as they start this new chapter of life together. Unfortunately I don’t have pictures of our invitations, decorations, party favors, etc… we were all having too much fun to notice! Here are some of the pictures that inspired our planning.
We celebrated their engagement at an Irish Pub with good food and good company. Seeing their faces as they walked in the door, surprised (and confused), was priceless. Keeping a big surprise can be tough, but that moment when it all comes together is worth it!
A BIG thank you to everyone who played a part in planning this surprise engagement party! We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help. Dan, you got a great catch!
